The 6 litre Wet Chemical Extinguisher is designed to tackle kitchen fires involving deep fat fryer fires – known as Class F – and is the only type which is safe to use. No other extinguisher should be used in a commercial kitchen with cooking oils and fats. The Wet Chemical rapidly knocks the flames out, cools the burning oil and seals the surface to prevent re-ignition thanks to the potassium solution inside. The extinguisher is easy to use, producing a gentle but highly effective spray which helps prevent oil splashing and features a stainless steel lance which means you can put out the flames without getting too close. With a 75F rating (meaning it’s capable of extinguishing a fire in a 75-litre deep fat fryer), it also has a 21A 113B rating for use on Class A and B fires, unlike some others on the market. Plus, it’s safe if sprayed inadvertently on live electrical equipment. Suitable for deep fat fires in kitchens. Types of fire Class F (cooking oils and fat), Class A (wood, paper, cloth, etc), and Class B (flammable liquids). Tested to 35kV, meaning it’s safe if inadvertently used on live electrical equipment. Anticipated lifespan with indoor use and proper maintenance - 10 years.
Wet chemical fire extinguishers are designed for one purpose; to extinguish Class F deep fat cooking oil fires. It works by a process of saponification where the chemical extinguishant discharge smothers the extremely hot oil to cut out the oxygen and stop fat bubbling through. The extinguisher should be completely emptied on the fire.
Developed for the sole purpose of fighting deep fat cooking fires, the wet chemical fire extinguisher is a recent innovation. Normal extinguishers will not cool a deep fat fire and can cause the hot oil to splash onto the user which is dangerous, but a wet chemical fire extinguisher fixes all that.
In fact, wet chemical extinguishers are so unique that a new fire class, Class F, and a new British Standard, BS 7937: 2000 had to be devised for them. The first one to appear was the Chubb FryFighter and a few others have followed.
The 6 litre size makes it easy for anyone to pick up but will fight a mighty 75 litre fat fire, even though the fat can be burning at 340 degrees! The specially formulated wet chemical causes a saponification effect that results in a thick, soapy foam smothering the fat and creating a barrier against re-ignition.
This chemical layer will also cool the fat but should be given a long time to do so.
The long lance applicator enables the user to stand well back and to gently apply the wet chemical onto the fire without danger. However, as the method of use is different to other fire extinguishers, we recommend that commercial kitchen staff be given quality fire training.
Although this extinguisher is not to be used on live electrical equipment, the heat of the moment can cause accidental spraying onto electrical items nearby so the special spray nozzle has been tested and passed the BSi 35 kv conductivity test. Another safety feature for the user.
It would be common practice to have a CO2 fire extinguisher and a large fire blanket alongside and for all to have identification signs above.
The quality of our wet chemical extinguishers is not equaled and they uniquely have these three guarantees:
With kitchens being the leading source of fires in many businesses, and the wet chemical fire extinguisher being the only man for the job, it really is a no-brainer purchase to comply with your Fire Risk Assessment.
